The Social Community
Here in our school we are striving to create a healthy community and give the children an experience of what that feels like and how it works. We want to empower them to see and exercise their part in keeping this little school community healthy, one in which we all feel safe, heard, valued, and important.
We meet in group circle each day. These circle times become an important gathering place for discussion, role-playing, ‘news’ reports, conflict resolution, voting, as well as singing, dancing, prayer and meditation. Each child is given an equal voice and as the children mature they are given more choices and responsibilities. We teach communication skills and help the child to help himself and others. We make our school rules together and learn mediation skills. The children are encouraged and taught how to help one another when there are minor injuries. They are allowed to express their emotions and guided to use “I” language when expressing feelings.
Many of our alumni report that circle time was their favorite part of Oasis and they really missed it when they went on to other programs that didn’t have this. We are humans. We want to be connected. To a young child, and to some extent all of us, the connection to others is the most important part of our lives. We hope our school family feels nurturing, and inclusive.
The Environment of Nature
Every Oasis Organic School has an outdoor environment that is as important as the indoor environment. It is our belief and experience that childen who grow up with nature as their playground will always feel a love for the environment and want to preserve and respect it.
They will remember it as a source of food, play, shelter, inspiration and comfort. They are taught to care for this environment and be aware of how they treat the plants and animals as well as their use of water and electricty. We have a school garden and participate in a recycling program.
